Angry Autistic Adult - Dealing with Meltdowns

Not everyone on the spectrum has meltdowns or irritability. But for those of us who do, there is a lot of shame and guilt. A vicious cycle of promising ourselves that we will learn better coping skills and it won't happen again, but then losing our sh*t over nothing.... again.
You aren't alone. I hear this all of the time from patients and struggle with it myself. Meltdowns are part of autism and they don't just disappear because we are adults. They happen less often than when I was young, but they still happen. I hold it together all day, until I just can't keep it in anymore and explode.
As an adult, the stakes are higher; the consequences can be severe. The risk of hurting others is frightening to us and to them. We don't seek help out of shame and fear. But there is help and a path forward.
